Persistence and Patience ….

Paid off!! I have landed my architect and could not have imagined one better!

He not only hit on my basic requirements; knowledgeable, interested in small space living, located in Canada, one I could afford,  he is also politically and socially aware, a believer that moving towards renewable energy is the solution and loves cats (really loves them).

This bio on LinkedIn … Sole practitioner doing architectural design of various scales, as well as architectural renderings. No project too small or too weird.

This is one of his designs. I think we are going to have a good time building the Ginger Shack together.

moose faucetMy friend put me on to elance.com and I am so grateful he did!

I am over the moon. Thank you, thank you, thank you Universe and John!!

In the Black?

I have $12,000.00 to build the Ginger Shack. It seems like a lot but I am starting to wonder if it is enough.

The Grand Cook Stove is 2400.00 USD. Take the exchange rate, the trip to Michigan, the stove pipe etc and I am thinking $4000.00 CAD.

$8000.00 is still a good amount of money.

I really enjoy a financial challenge. I grew up with coupons.

Here’s to staying in the black on this adventure.

homedepot-3Slick door handles.

Keeping my eyes on their flyers … things like this have to go one sale!?

I hear that odd sized windows and 1 off windows go on sale.

Perfect.

I feel like my new second hand shopping ground just opened up. Goodbye Value Village …. Hello Home Depot!

My lesbian status just got a gold star!!

Reclaim Detroit!

detroit_reclamation-12I have had a love affair with this city for a number of years. If I was a billionaire business person I would buy up most of the downtown and move my head quarters there. If Havana, Cuba is a UNESCO heritage site I don’t know why Detroit is not. Stunning Architectural history everywhere.

A friend of mine sent me this article and we are now planning our Michigan road trip! One Amish Wood Burning Stove and some amazing wood for my floors!

Reclaimed history in my home? Yes please!

The heart of the home

grand cook stoveI have had a lot of romantic day dreams about cooking in my new home. Thanks to some amazing Amish design I think they are about to come true.

Meet the heart of my home – The Grand Cook Stove.

6 loaves of bread, a tasty birthday cake or simple stir fry … sky is the limit!

Things for the Ginger Shack

things for GSMy dad was just in town for a visit. We started to talk about the actual building of the Ginger Shack. I realized that the only thing I had planned lately was my salt and pepper shakers. I have been stuck in the design/decorating part of this project. No surprise as that is my comfort zone/knowledge base. I have made a promise to myself that 2 times a month (or more if needed) I will be in a Home Depot, Home building, Fireplace type store.

My dad will be back in town for the first two weeks of August to help me build it. Meet the first of my family I have recruited. 3 more to go.

A Room With A View

Summer in the woods, you can feel very cozy and isolated. In winter you realize how incredibly close you are building to your neighbour and the main road. I have 23 acres and am probably 200 meters from my neighbour. WFT?!? Sorry Jeff, it was just the lay of the land.

I drew out the deck and the Ginger Shack in the snow and took stock of the winter view/exposure from the windows. I liked what I saw.

Final Draft…

ginger s - floor planRight now this is what I am building.

A 320 square foot deck – 20 long by 16 wide.

A  100 square foot home – 81 square foot main floor and a 49 square foot loft.

Right now I am feeling pretty solid in my progress of understanding how my home should look.

Day of Thanks for January 19

me - deerheerstLeo Jul 23 | Aug 22 In one of his poems, Rumi writes about being alone with a wise elder. “Please,” he says to the sage, “do not hold back from telling me any secrets about this universe.” In the coming weeks, Leo, I suggest you make a similar request of many people, and not just those you regard as wise. You’re in a phase when pretty much everyone is a potential teacher who has a valuable clue to offer you. Treat the whole world as your classroom.

Done and done. I just started the research side of building the Ginger Shack and have been reaching out to every where to see what others think, are doing and have learnt from their experiences.
